64% of this product is plain orthoboric acid (aka boric acid), which you can buy 5lbs for less than $20. The other 36% is labeled as "Inert Ingredients." I thought the law in the US required that all ingredients be identified. The label does not identify any of the inert ingredients. When a company engages in this kind of furtive practice, it reflects poorly on the product.
So DISCLAIMER: everyone's body reacts differently to things, especially things like this. So read all the reviews, including this one, with a grain of salt. With that said I had mixed luck. I tested a small area on my forearm to make sure I wouldn't have an allergic reaction and that it worked. I let it sit, wrapped, for over an hour and when I took the plastic wrap off. My arm stayed numb for over 3 hours. I bought this product for a large back piece that takes up about 25% of my back. I had part of the tattoo done before buying this and the pain was very intense, way more so than other tattoos and I was only able to last an hour. Now I have 12 tattoos on me and a few are quite large, so I am no stranger to what to expect but this one was very detailed and near my spine (the other two on my back are not as detailed and smaller than this new one). My artist suggested a cream so I could sit longer. Well once it was time for the 2nd session I put a generous amount on (I suggest with a glove!) an hour and a half before my appointment and wrapped it up. When he started tattooing I felt nothing but pressure and I was so excited it was working. However, after about 10-15 minutes it was no longer numb and I was starting to gain most of my sensation back. It ended up somewhat dulling the pain to were I could tolerate it better but it was a pretty small improvement.
I always thought that Hu Flung Pu was a flash-in-the-pan author and that his "Brown Stains on the Wall" was just a combination of dumb luck, the heady, overly capitalistic climate of the 1980s and the expiration of several statutes on the books of Congress...I really dismissed him as a one-trick pony whose 15 minutes expired about the time slap bracelets and Hypercolor shirts were headed out to Africa in Goodwill charity boxes.
Doesn't Work. As recommended I used the two-part system, purchased at Home Depot, and applied it to new white leather New Balance walking shoes. Following the instructions precisely, I applied two base coats, giving 1 hour between each instead of the 30-min. minimum. Then I applied the top coats, again waiting 1-hour between each to assure maximum drying. The air temp. was about 75 deg with 45% R.H. I waited approx. 24-hours to use the shoes to insure max curing. I was suspicious as the surface felt tacky and I was proven right. The new white shoes picked up every spec of dirt they contacted and my new shoes looked like I had marched thru a bog! Within 1-week the coating started peeling off, like a bad coat of lacquer. I can't wait for it to peel completely off so my new shoes can go back to looking new...almost. I have tried to contact Rustoleum thru their website but all I ever get is "This page can't be displayed" so apparently even their website is defective as well. The box said to contact Rustoleum directly at an 800 number, but the box, and my receipt, are long gone.
I highly recommend this product. It works great for me, I don't have very red skin but I use this as a cover up. I also viewed Megan Rossette on Youtube to be sure I wanted the product, and yes. Great product. You don't get very much of it, the bottle is small unfortunately.
